Day 2 Cape Maclear to Mangochi

Day 2 First Cycling Day

An action-packed first day of cycling to Mangochi 66 km. We had our first proper view of the lake in daylight with its soft sand, fishing boats and children laughing and playing on the shores.

Lake Malawi
Locals collect fresh water from the lake
With our bikes assembled we set off and I promptly fell off, forgetting how bikes don't always work in sand and my excuse that my toeclips held my foot in.

Ready to go
All set with essential jelly seat and pants

It was exciting riding avoiding the fire. The local boys start a fire to smoke out mice, which full of protein, are a Malawi delicacy.
Cycling through the smoke
Baobab trees are scattered throughout the landscape.
I find that I have to pinch myself to tell myself that I am really here. There is fantastic scenery, mountains in the distance, sun shining. What could be better than cycling (one of my favourite activities) through Malawi (one of my favourite countries)?
A welcome lunch stop and water fill up.
Local businesses line the route

Our day's ride ends in the old colonial town of Mangochi on the Shire River between Lake Malawi and the smaller Lake Malombe. A great first day's cycling and a welcome drink.
Yesterday there was a lizard on the wall, today there was an unexpected visitor in the shower.

My frog in the shower was gently put outside.
